 BACK

be about to ->be ready to do sth, be on the point of

be down with ->be ill with

be for ->be in favour of

be in ->be at home/office

be in for ->be about to happen, expect

BREAK

break away ->escape suddenly, leave a political party

break in ->train (a horse), interrupt a conversation

break off ->end a relationship (engagement, diplomatic relations)

break out ->start suddenly (war, fire, epidemy), escape

break through ->penetrate

break to ->tell (usually bad news)

break up ->stop for holidays (school children), break into pieces, end a relationship, disperse

BRING

bring about ->cause to happen

bring back ->return, recall

bring down ->cause to fall

bring forward ->move sth to an earlier time (meeting)

bring in ->introduce, produce, create profit

bring on ->cause sth to happen

bring out ->publish, reveal/show

bring over ->make sb change his way of thinking

bring round/to ->persuade, help sb regain consciousness

bring up ->rear/raise a child, vomit, mention

CALL

call back -> phone back, recall, call to return

call for -> demand/require/need

call in -> request the return of (books), invite to a place, visit briefly

call off -> cancel

call on -> visit formally

call at -> visit a place

call out -> announce in a loud voice, order to come to sb’s help.

call up -> phone, call for military service.

CARRY

carry away -> cause sb to lose self-control, be very excited

carry off -> win sth (prize), handle successfully.

carry on (with) -> behave strangely, continue

carry on with -> continue, have an affair

carry out -> complete, execute

carry through -> accomplish, complete successfully.

catch up ->reach sb who is ahead

come down with ->become ill

come in ->enter

come into ->inherit

come off ->happen, succeed, become detached

come on ->hurry up (imp), progress, begin

come out ->appear, be published, blossom (plants), become known

come round ->regain consciousness, pay a visit, accept sb’s opinion

come to ->amount to a total

come through ->survive, recover from a serious illness

come over ->visit, get over a problem

come up ->arise, appear above the soil (plants), be mentioned

come up to ->approach

come up against ->be faced with

come up with ->find (answer, solution etc),produce (ideas, solutions)

CUT

cut across -> take a shorter way

cut back (on) -> reduce (expenses, production)

cut away ->remove by cutting

cut down ->fell (a tree), kill/injure sb with a sword

cut down on reduce the amount or quantity of sth

cut in or into ->interrupt

cut off ->disconnect, isolate

cut out ->extract, omit, stop,

cut out for/to be ->suited for a job

cut up ->divide sth into pieces with a knife, distress

DO

do away with -> get rid of/abolish, kill/murder

do down ->cheat, speak badly of

do for ->do housework for sb, ruin

do in ->kill/murder

do out ->clean or tidy sth

do out of ->prevent sb from having sth by cheating

do up -> fasten/button, redecorate; make a parcel

do with ->tolerate, be related to, be content with

do without -> manage without

DRAW 

draw back ->be unwilling to fulfil a promise, move away

draw in -> arrive at a station (bus/train)

draw out -> encourage to be less shy, take money from a bank account

draw up -> stop (vehicle) write out (list, will etc.)

FALL

fall apart ->break/fall to pieces

fall back -> move or turn back

fall back on ->turn to sb for help, support

fall behind ->be overtaken, make no progress, fail to keep up with

fall behind with -> fail to pay in time

fall down -> fall to the ground/collapse

fall for -> fall in love with sb, be deceived by

fall in ->collapse

fall in with ->agree to an idea, meet sb by chance

fall off ->decrease

fall on -> attack sb fiercely

fall out -> occur, leave a military line, quarrel
