In the development of a nation a few historic sites take on emotional significance for all citizens. One such spot for Americans is the small village of valley Forge, now converted into a state park, situated on a small river in southeastern Pennsylvania some twenty miles northwest of Philadelphia. There in the American revolution the main camp of the continental army was maintained from December, 1777, to June, 1778, under the command of George Washington. At the peak of the winter, conditions were frightful: subsistence was wretched, barracks were not sufficient to accommodate the soldiers, and sickness and suffering were rife. The number of emaciated and ragged troops diminished through desertion and death, and the remaining men, who totaled about eleven thousand muttered about mutiny but were held together by their royalty to Washington and the patriotic cause. Two distinguished foreigners, the Frenchman Lafayette and the prussian Steuben, shared the acute misery of the soldiers. Steuben committed his energies to drilling and organizing the men, evolved an integrated army out of the loose-jointed band, and was with it in victory at the end of hostilities. 21.
