--- Speaking 011ArticlesYou are the activity
coordinator for your local sports centre. You read an article criticizingthe centre in the local
newspaper. Talk to the editor to correct the inaccuracies.Dear Editor,As a coordinator of sports
and leisure activities for the Woodward Sports Centre, I feel that I mustpoint out several
inaccuracies in your recent article. "Sports Centre Troubles"I was distressed by your
implication that there have been several injuries as a result of our staff's
inadequate training.Our instructors are
required to have a degree in physical education and at least five years of
previous work experience.Furthermore, there has been
only one injury since the opening of the Centre. As this was a boy who fell
off his bicycle onhis way to the Centre, we
can hardly be held responsible.Another criticism expressed
in your article was that the high school basketball team did not have
sufficient time onthe basketball court. This problem came to our
attention during our first month. We immediately arranged a meeting with the
coachand reorganized the
schedule to accommodate the team's needs. After reading your article,
we carried out a survey among parents of children who use our facilities. While it is true that
approximately 10% of the parents expressed some dissatisfaction, according
to survey results, the majority are very
satisfied with our services. With regard to being more
aware of parents' opinions, I would like to point out that we have monthly
meetings where parentscan express their concerns
and offer their suggestions for improvement. Many of these suggestions have
been implemented. We trust that you will
publish a new article so that your readers will get a more accurate picture
of the Woodward Sports Centreand its activities.Speaking

Future schools with present tools
There's no need to reinvent
education in order to improve our schools. We simply have to make better use
of the resources thatwe already have. One
example is the community around us. Another is technology, which could be
developed intoa powerful educational
tool.The community surrounding
the school already exists, but how can we exploit it?For one thing parents have
a lot to teach us - either interesting professions to tell us about, or life
experiences we can learn from.In addition, there are
local industries which will probably employ some of the students in the
future. How about having representativesfrom these industries
explain how their companies work and what employment opportunities they can
offer after graduation?Computers are another
resource already present in plenty of schools. But are they being used to
the best advantage of the students and teachers? It's easy to imagine
classrooms where computerswith Internet access are a
regular feature. Students could work with class material on an Internet site
that also has answers,so that they would be able
to work at their own pace and check themselves on-line.This would free teachers to
devote more time to students who are having trouble. To sum up, I'd like to see
schools of the future make better use of the resources and tools we have at
hand such as peoplein the community and
computer technology.I think these changes would
go a long way to creating a better learning environment, and they should be
quite easy to implement.Speaking 03State your opinion about a healthy lifestyle. What are the keys to such a
lifestyle?Nowadays we are all keen on
being healthy. But what is actually involved in maintaining a healthy
lifestyle? To my mind there are two
main ingredients: exercise and sensible diet. For me, the most important
factor for a healthy future is exercise. Without exercise, we are inviting
trouble.Take "couch potatoes," for
example, who just sit in front of the television all day eating junk food
and never doanything to look after
their bodies. They end up fat and
unhealthy their arteries full of cholesterol. They're just asking to die
young from a heart attack. We've all got a bit of the
"couch potato" in us, but I believe that we must try to exercise as often as
we can. No matterhow busy we are with school
or work, we can still find two or three times a week to enjoy recreational
sports,go to a gym for aerobics or
even go for a walk with some friends. After all, it's important that we do
something toget our hearts pumping,
burn off those extra calories and keep our stress levels down. The second most vital
ingredient for a healthy lifestyle in my opinion is to eat sensibly. When it comes to diet, a
lot of people don't care enough about their food. As a result, they eat too
much fastfood and other
non-nutritious junk foods and not enough fresh fruit and vegetables. It
wouldn't hurt us to reviewour eating habits, and
strive for a more balanced, low-fat, high-fiber diet. We could also try to
eat more fish and poultry, thereby cutting down on our
intake of red meat, which is not only high in fat but also loaded with
hormones.To sum up, we have
everything to gain by exercising and eating more sensibly. As the old saying goes,
"Prevention is better than cure," and exercising and eating sensibly are the
best forms of prevention I know. The end of demo
