Speaking 01

secretary

Describe a new job you have just started.

Firstly my main job is to type letters, answer the telephones and use the computer a little.
I meet many people because I sit
at the front desk. I have work to do practically every minute so I have no time to get bored.
I like the job because it is only five minutes' walk from my flat which means I don't have to
get up too early in the morning!
I have to be there by 8.30 a.m. and I leave at 4.30 p.m.
That gives me the whole evening free which is nice.
The other secretaries in the office seem very friendly. However, there is one older woman
who has been there for many years and seems to dislike young new workers. But I am sure
once I settle in, she and I will become friends.
We have a coffee-break around mid-morning when we can sit and chat for about ten minutes.
Two of the girls are married and two are single, so there is quite a bit of interesting gossip!
The work itself, is quite enjoyable and my boss seems a pleasant man. I hope I shall be happy there.

Talk about England

I would like to visit Britain very much because I have heard so much about it from
my teachers at school and I would like to see the country for myself.
London, the capital of England, is where I would like to start my visit. The River Thames
flows through London and there is a big bridge, Tower Bridge, over it
which lifts up for passing ships.
Of course, I would like to see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
In the heart of London, is Piccadilly Circus, and not far away is the National Gallery, and
the famous Trafalgar Square with Nelson's Column in the centre. Here, too, are thousands
of pigeons which come to be fed by the tourists. I would like to go to the shops in Oxford Street.
I also want to visit Hyde Park Corner where, on Sunday mornings, people stand on boxes and
give their ideas about politics, religion or whatever they want to talk about.
Oxford and Cambridge are famous for their old universities which are the best in England.
There are special guides who can take visitors around the beautiful university buildings.
A town not far from Oxford is Stratford-upon-Avon where the playwright William Shakespeare
was born.
There are still houses from the 16th century here, including the house where he lived.
On the River Avon stands the Royal Shakespeare Theatre where Shakespeare's plays are performed.
There are so many things to see in England. I hope that one day I will go there.
